France based noise-rock group Tickles have released their debut album 'Sugar & Plastic Plates'. Emerging back in 2018 the four-piece have been carving a reputation as one of the most exciting and unpredictable up and coming bands. 'Sugar & Plastic Plates' sees Tickles put together nine tracks that are charged with the raw intensity of their noise-punk roots but this time they dig a little deeper into something darker. Lyrically the tracks see them wrestle with isolation, anxiety, abandonment and the scars of childhood.
"Recording with Chris Hoggomat flowed effortlessly as we've spent a long time refining those nine tracks and know exactly what we wanted. The connection with Chris allowed us to experiment freely, exploring noise, unusual sounds, and even techno-inspired textures, pushing each song to its limits while keeping its core intact. The result is a record that captures both our chaotic power and the careful thought behind each arrangement, offering a vivid experience of our new incarnation. The album title, subject matter and its artwork capture the bittersweet feeling of birthdays, moments filled with joy, yet sometimes tinged with solitude as connections slowly fade and loneliness quietly settles in." - (Lucas Bonfils, Vocals, Tickles)
Over nine-tracks Tickles tackle big post-hardcore sounds to noise-punk and even some softer alt-rock moments. From each song to the next you never really know what's going to come next. Starting with 'I'm Not The Body' which welcomes listeners with a drawn out punk like vocal before the guitars start crashing in building it into something more hardcore edged. 'The Safest Car' and 'Daughters Around' are two of my favourite tracks on the album and come at the start where there's still an erratic sort of energy. 'The Safest Car' has a rumbly modern feel while the chorus is in your face noise. While 'Daughters Around' takes on a whole new personality almost feeling a little techno inspired. Its fuzzy and addictive throughout most of the track but keeping true to about every other song on this album it has it's moments where it erupts into loud sounds that feel dipped in hardcore energy. Songs like 'Love Cells' and 'Cheeks' that come next are more chilled out taking a little step away from the frantic sounds. 'Love Cells' reminds me more of the vibe of Fontaines DC while 'Cheeks' is like a nice alt-rock piece complete with little vocal harmonies. 'Haunted' is an interesting piece that feels like it's sitting on the edge of explosion. Like a volcano ready to explode and then it does and becomes this very modern feeling track that has unusual elements. Much like a lot of this album 'Norah' feels like a sonic whiplash. A small track that teases something coming with the guitars that strike into action throughout before they completely take over and the vocals scream erratically. Then before you know it 'Norah' is taking you back a little bit again but without losing the intensity. This one feels the most punk on the album and I really enjoy it. 'One Foot Chair' is probably the only track on the album that doesn't particularly stand out to me. It does the same kind of up and down that's found within other songs and I like the softer repetitive melody, it makes a nice addition. Whereas closer 'Drawings' really grabbed me. The sudden contrast of the haunting soft melody almost nodding again to artists like Fontaines DC gives an emotive pull for a large chunk of the track before again it breaks into something crazy. But if you hadn't guessed before long it's dropped right back down to that calmer melody and then it builds up again. Tickles debut album 'Sugar & Plastic Plates' feels like true experimentation that's led to the creation of nine unusual but great songs. While everything's a little odd feeling and erratic at times you can still hear how the songs are structured and make sense. Nothing here is out of place even if it feels strange at first. I definitely have my favourites on 'Sugar & Plastic Plates' but each and every song deserves your attention and at least one spin in your ears.
