NC metal act Thus Spoke's debut EP, which dropped at the end of August sees the newcomers come out with force. 'Reclamation' which consists of six tracks delivers heavy with a twist of nostalgia on every one.
The metalcore five-piece combine a ruthless and raw energy with deeply personal lyrics that confront the darkest parts of the human experience. With extreme vocals and melodic hooks it's hard not to hear that the likes of The Black Dahlia Murder or August Burns Red may have had an influence on their music.
The appropriately named 'Wake Up' opens the EP and gets listeners tuned in and listening. The opening riff has a whole personality of it's own and as it comes back again and again throughout the track it kept me wanting to get up and move. Vocally the song starts with a speech feeling a lot like something that would belong in a 2000's metalcore track and the almost hardcore direction in which the vocals head kept that feeling throughout. 'Wake Up' is a track that feels dangerous and addictive like something you shouldn't have but I just can't get enough.
Next track ' The Lies We Follow' shows off a bit of a more melodic side to Thus Spoke in the chorus, letting us know that these guys can simultaneously do modern up in your face sounds while also giving something your Dad could enjoy. Much more vibrant sounding is the bands most recent single 'L'Appel Du Vide', again clearly channeling a 2000's sound, this one is more upbeat while also retaining the melodic type chorus we heard in the song before. Alongside the melodic power of this track there's also emotion fueled growls that allow the raw energy of the band to come through. Swiftly dragging you back to the pits of hell 'We Can't Lose Hope' comes in full throttle and never lets up. This was actually the first track I heard from Thus Spoke and this was the one that had me knowing I needed to hear more. This was the bands debut single and it seems to show every little corner of the bands talents including the very impressive drumming. 'We Can't Lose Hope' is an unstoppable force and was such a strong debut single it's no wonder it still stands out on the EP. Taking a bit of a death metal form 'The Final Goodbye' has that sort of spooky heavy guitar sound that I am a huge fan of in the intro before the thing explodes with an energy that feels like the band are trying to outrace themselves. There's so much packed into this one and again this is a super track. 'The Final Goodbye' is one to stick around for but unlike the name suggests this is not the final track on 'Reclamation'. EP closer 'My Salvation' is probably my least favourite, this is a big song that feels like the band are doing something a little bit more technical yet they stay true to the sound of the rest of 'Reclamation'. It's still heavy and packed with that ruthlessness that is apparent elsewhere so don't get me wrong this is a good track, it's just that when compared to others that I really loved from the EP this is potentially one I would forget about. I am very happy I got the chance to check out this EP, 'Reclamation' is a very strong start from Thus Spoke, the metalcore act deliver anything you could want in a song in this genre, from the emotion fueled growls, to the large guitars and the intense drumming. They're a band I could see easily gracing many festival stages and gaining lots of fans along the way.
