Norwich duo With Teeth release their second EP 'Spiralling'. With a sound bigger than your average two-piece With Teeth are a duo that are loud, aggressive and impossible to ignore. The alt-rock/post-hardcore act thrive on intensity within their sound and that confrontational energy complete with a punk edge has seen them already make impressive moves in the scene. First single off of new EP 'Self-Made Defeat' even earned multiple spins on BBC Introducing Suffolk and Norfolk. Opening with that popular single 'Self-Made Defeat' a sort of alt punk swagger seeps through. The fierce intensity comes from the vocal but it's met with a sort of groove in the instruments. Lyrically announcing in the chorus "come on and move your feet to the sound of the beat" but following that with dark honest lyricism powers the aggression within the song. I can understand why this one has become popular with it's upbeat energy and truthful angry story. The next track 'Poor Corpses' explodes into life with alt riffs but doesn't feel as angry as the track before. The rough vocals roll over the sweeping instrumental in the verses almost allowing for a calm moment within the EP. The chorus however is massive full of rumbling lines that will most likely get everyone in the room into the pit. The use of chanting vocals in this one also make me think that this one would be great in a live setting. 'Minotaur' is personally my favourite on the EP, growing in intensity from the first staggered note before making it's way into something fuzzy and powerful. The alt-rock track feels a little unsettling at times, a bit uncomfortable but in a way that's exciting and makes you want to hear more. The way it switches between in your face intensity and calmer melodies made to lure you in is really cool and says a lot about how talented With Teeth are as writers. For me the build up to the breakdown like moment completely makes the song when the vocals chant before the song drops into a controlled chaos. Easily my favourite track on here and one I will be playing again and again. Then we have 'Burn' which is probably the most in your face about it's message and the most manically fast. The words "I love my country and I wanna see it burn" really tells you the message that's within. The "burn burn burn burn" chant within the chorus gives listeners a chance to join in and also release some of that anger that I think we all hold about the state of the world at the minute. Closing the EP is 'The Grief' which is the most somber feeling of the five tracks. With a dark toned guitar and the same rough vocal but it feels turned down a little. This one's less about straight up anger and lets the sadness and disappointment make its way in. Even in the big chorus it doesn't act as in your face as every other track on here it allows us to just reflect in the feelings. I think this track is a great choice to close out 'Spiralling' as it finishes on a reflective note after having everything thrown at you in the previous tracks. Overall, With Teeth have created a sound that's perfect for not only the modern era of music but for the modern state as a whole. Their confrontational approach is impossible to ignore and the loud sounds they put out demand your attention with every note.
