Exciting alternative breakouts Summoners released their debut EP 'No Control' earlier this year. Pulling elements from various avenues of the alternative genre, Summoners have been coined the "next big thing" with their interesting and dark toned blend of hard alternative rock. The group have so far released six singles, all of which feature on 'No Control', and in their breakout year they have been making big waves including being featured seven times on BBC Introducing. Summoners rapid escalation that has seen them jump from support act to headliner in just six months shows no signs of slowing down, and these guys could be one of your new favourite alternative acts. Summoners provide a raw look into mental health and an inventive journey through the alt rock powered stories. The ambitious songwriting takes listeners down a dark path but it's simultaneously packed with explosive high-octane rock sounds. Opening with most recent single 'Noir', the six-track EP comes straight at you with a rock fierceness and massive riffs. The fuzzy toned hard rock feeling track is easily one of my favourites on the EP and was a great way to begin this adventure. 'Erase Replace' is somehow even more in your face than the last track, taking on a faster personality that's packed with grit. This is the track on here that I can imagine goes off live, it's almost begging you to start a mosh pit even sat in your bedroom listening on your headphones. Slowly easing into another aspect of their interesting sound, next up from Summoners is 'The Fear'. This one is a clear nod to mental health lyrically and manages to capture the erratic feelings of anxiety in the constantly racing guitar riffs. Probably my number one favourite track on the EP is 'Spite' at first it comes in very bright modern alt rock feeling with bouncy drums and guitar, but before long it's chugging away backed by a spooky synth sound reminding me a little of the instrumentals in a Rob Zombie track. On top of this Summoners also deliver a huge rock chorus that makes you want to scream into the void alongside it. This is a track that feels as though it's spitting venom but in the best most addictive way. Potentially the most energetic is 'The Abyss', a little less gritty and almost a bit softer feeling this one is pure energy bottled into a track that holds back slightly in the verses but completely lets go in it's massive chorus. Closing out the EP is a track that probably stands out as being the most unusual compared to everything else in Summoners discography. The background growls giving you the dark rock tone, but over the top there's a lighter vocal melody, ditching the rough grittiness and leaving 'Let You Go' as an eerie feeling end to what for the most part has been a big guitar fueled adventure. Summoners ambitious songwriting makes 'No Control' easily one of the more interesting EP's I have heard this year. I overall enjoyed the way each song is different from the last but in a way that flows almost getting gradually calmer and less angry. I can see why people are excited about this five-piece as 'No Control' isn't just another rock EP and as a band they aren't just another alternative rock act but rather they're doing something that is uniquely their own.
