UK alt-metal powerhouse Night Thieves release their debut album 'Metaxis'. Continuing to build on the success from their 2024 EP 'Polarity', Night Thieves enter new territory with their debut album 'Metaxis'. Proving themselves to be one of the UK's most exciting emerging alt-metal talents Night Thieves have already earned acclaim from the likes of Kerrang! Radio, Metal Hammer, Planet Rock, Powerplay Magazine, BBC Radio One, Total Rock and more. 'Metaxis' feels like stepping into a new world, something otherworldly and packed with rich and raw sounds. Opening with 'Obsidian' the intense intro pulls you in before the track bursts into a stunning chorus that tells a lot about the arena-sized choruses we can find throughout the whole album. Then with more grit and a rockier tone the previous single 'Mycelia' roars into life with a ferocious attitude that demands you listen. Third track 'Home' yet again takes on a different kind of vibe, this time coming in not only with thunderous tones but a bright vibrant energy that allows the song to feel light and hopeful. It's soft tones will have you floating through the track while you enjoy the big piece. One of my first favourites on the album is 'Freer' with a dark intensity that's backed up by synths and an explosive modern metalcore energy. At this point in the album I feel like we see a switch into something that storywise feels more empowered and sound wise leans into more metalcore. 'Running (Out of Time)' is the same kind of thing again, acting a little different from the previous songs but still being anthem sized. The verses have a little bit of a chaotic attitude with fast vocals and instruments while in the chorus it's reigned in becoming something almost gentle and melodic. 'In Between Pt.1' acts as a little intro into the full track 'In Between Pt.2', it feels like gently floating out to sea before crashing into something more with force. The song that follows at first leans into the floaty calmness before the hard-hitting chorus takes over. There's an immense power in this one and the chorus of 'In Between Pt.2' is definitely a stand-out moment for me on the album. The rough vocal oozes emotions over the large instrumental creating a sound that belongs on big stages. This latter part of the album is firmly my favourite bit as we go from the incredible strength of 'In Between Pt.2' right into 'See You On The Otherside'. The track which features Jessie Powell (Dream State) simultaneously has light haunting notes and the crushing weight of guitars and drums. This is another stand-out track and one that really did make me think "this band are going to be big, and this song will be popular". 'The Game' is another synth-laden modern metalcore leaning piece. With another huge chorus and even a bit of a breakdown 'The Game' for me is another really strong track that sits in this incredible part in 'Metaxis'. Closing with 'Maritime' Night Thieves lean back into the more alt-metal sounds found at the start of the album, wrapping it all up nicely. The massive vocal completely owns this track and if they somehow haven't won you over already by this point, the way they seem to give everything in this one easily will. Overall, 'Metaxis' is a very impressive debut album and proves to me why Night Thieves are gaining the traction they are. Managing to create a sort of fantasy feeling escape within ten songs but lyrically still so rooted in real world and personal problems, and then pairing this with massive synths, guitars, drums and a vocal to match there's really nothing in 'Metaxis' to not like. I feel like they manage to make songs that both more old school metal lovers will enjoy and they make sure there's enough us modern metalcore fans as well.
