KNIFE BRIDE welcome you into the dark fairytale that is 'sorry about the plague'. The Brighton based Nu-gothika quartet are known for their creative characterisation, cinematic level fantasy and the way they combine these stories with real life experiences. 'sorry about the plague' is possibly the deepest we've seen them go into this "fantasy" world with character 'The Bride'. 'alone at the altar' is not only the opening track of the EP but it was also the first single to come from it, acting as an introduction to the story in every way. I have had this explosive track on repeat since it's first release and now hearing it as part of the full body of work I can say it's ferocious nature is very fitting to the rest of the theme of 'sorry about the plague'. The raw power of a vocal that leans into a pop sound without losing attitude mixed with the thundering aggression of the instrumentals cement this as a unique modern track. The chorus gets stuck in my head every time I hear it begging me to come back and listen again. Knowing this is only the first taste of 'sorry about the plague' had me more than excited to dive in further. Then coming in with more intensity second single 'crucify' bursts into life with even more energy. The bouncy track combines speed with stunning melodies and KNIFE BRIDE's signature massive catchy chorus. This one's packed with attitude letting you know just how dangerous 'The Bride' may be. The track lyrically acts as a reflection on self-destructive behaviour and the constant up and downs with fast guitars jumping straight to soft melodies helps reflect on that constant battle. Our first taste of something new comes in the form of 'lilies'. Sound wise it feels more floaty and free leading you further into the dark fantasy, while in the real world this one is lyrically rooted in a complicated relationship with anti-depressants. This one feels like something new for KNIFE BRIDE, still having their intensity but also letting the rawness of the message shine through completely. Then without warning we are thrust right back into something heavy, not even just heavy but possibly the heaviest feeling track on the EP. 'porcelain' feels like a modern metal track but with enough of a pop influence to make it unique and completely KNIFE BRIDE. Complete with another signature massive chorus that begs you to come back again and again, and maybe the biggest breakdown on 'sorry for the plague', at this four track mark out of five I was sure that every track on here was going to be a hit in it's own right. Ending with 'poisoned by god' which has more of a nostalgic tint than anything else I've heard on the EP. The spacey guitars and powerful vocal remind me a lot of pop rock songs from the 90's and early 2000's. The chorus of this one is a favourite moment of mine, the sweetness laced with something darker and strong emotions shining through the vocal give it a dreamy soundscape vibe. The track sticks on this light tone most of the way through but it wouldn't be a KNIFE BRIDE song without something a little heavy and towards the end we welcome a scream that begins the slow descent into chuggy guitars before it fades out.
As a whole 'sorry about the plague' is a special collection of songs that stand out on their own but create a stunning atmosphere together. This is a really impressive piece of work from the soft moments to the heavy ones proving just what KNIFE BRIDE are capable of and why they are one of my favourite rising acts at the minute.
