downcast have released their brand new four-track EP, which includes tracks like Backstreet Boys cover 'just want you to know' and new single 'home' which features Sammy Clifford (WSTR). Bristol alt rock/emo group downcast have carved an impressive reputation in the local music scene and with each release they're gaining more and more fans. Debut album 'i saw hell when i was with you' released in 2022 saw huge success and took the band all around the UK earning them new fans at every stop. In 2024 they put out their 90's retro nostalgia themed EP 'WTF HAPPENED'. Now after a period spent writing they have put out their brand new EP 'NOTHING LEFT TO GIVE'. This four-track piece has everything from original material with great featured artists and a couple of epic covers. Kicking off the EP is title track and previous single 'nothing left to give', this previous single is the darkest and heaviest diving a little bit into the nu metal genre. These darker tones are complimented by some harsh vocals from Dream State's Jessie Powell. downcast then take on a super fun and pop-punk feeling cover of Backstreet Boys 'just want you to know'. This track drives the EP in a completely different direction from the opener and to be honest kind of sets the tone for the rest. Taking the pop melodies of this song downcast use that and turn it into a big emotional toned emo/pop-punk piece that feels like something completely new. If I didn't know this was a cover I honestly think I would believe this to be a downcast original they make it so their own. My favourite song on the EP has to be new single 'home' which features Sammy Clifford from WSTR. This one feels very authentic, upbeat and nostalgic. downcast seem to tell a story of when you wish you you could go back in time to when life was easier and that feeling is helped by the melodies that are reminiscent of bands I listened to when I was that age. This one manages to capture the sounds of sitting outside with your friends as a teen in summer. The addition of the WSTR singers vocals furthers this feeling and the alt/emo track is one I can't stop coming back to. Closing the EP was an unexpected cover (but that's what I get for not checking the tracklist first). Taking on a My Chemical Romance classic is no easy thing to do but downcast's version of 'i don't love you' keeps everything that's great about the original, the big cinematic emo feelings. However, they add their own little spin with more of an edge on the guitars while the gritty alt rock vocal of Liam Edwards fuels it the whole way through. This was definitely a pleasant surprise at the end of a group of great yet very different tracks. downcast's new EP 'NOTHING LEFT TO GIVE' feels like a little highlight reel of what the band have been up to recently. A couple of original singles that are very different from one an other but both work so well. Then two covers which continue to show off downcast's strengths and their ability to take something and make it their own. If you're looking for a new fun little EP to stick on this is probably it.
