Modern rock quartet Dark Bloom burst onto the scene last year and have now released their raw, hard-hitting debut EP 'In The Solace of What We Can't Possess'. They may be new to the scene but the group from Leicester have already seen support from Alyx Holcombe's BBC Introducing Rock and were on BBC Introducing's Hot for '24 List. With a handful of singles and now a debut EP under their belts Dark Bloom are well on their way to become a popular name in alternative music. 'In The Solace of What We Can't Possess' covers topics from societal pressures, to being overwhelmed by social media to feelings of betrayal.

"Lyrically, ITSOWWCP revolves around the search for your own identity. We grow everyday through our experiences in life and our connections with our friends, our loved ones, and through art, so it can be pretty overwhelming to 'know' who you are. This collection of songs represents the journey of self-discovery through the distorted lens of social media and then through real love and loss." - (Sulley Archer, Vocals, Dark Bloom)

'In The Solace of What We Can't Possess' sees five tracks combine raw feelings with both melodic and heavy rock moments, even venturing into metalcore and hardcore tones at times. 'Plastic Melts...' opens with cinematic electronics before the song crashes to life immediately welcoming you to Dark Blooms distinct sound. Potentially the heaviest on the EP this is a fresh rock song that verges on metalcore. This first track reminds me a lot of artists like Boston Manor, it's catchy chorus has the same kind of energy. While the second verse dips into something much harsher and rawer before quickly taking it right back to the big catchy rock energy of the chorus. If the first track on 'In The Solace of What We Can't Possess' doesn't get you hooked then the bouncy 'Blur' definitely will. Unique and more melodic than it's predecessor it's packed with another big chorus and even bigger riffs. 'Blur' isn't shying away from anything, the metalcore feeling guitars come and go just enough to remind you of the heavy energy these guys possess but this is a rock song. The track reaches it's height before a breakdown that you can really sink your teeth into as vocalist Sulley shrieks "who cares for the truth?". The first single to come from this EP was 'Grace' and the track takes us into even more of a raw direction. With a little less intensity than the tracks before 'Grace' is full of emotion and the monumental chorus easily makes this one stand out amongst it's peers. Fun fact about this one is that it was inspired a bit by the infamous Peter Marsh "what a sad little life" rant from 'Come Dine With Me'. 'In The Haze' is a personal favourite of mine off the EP, everything is soaked in deep emotions from the guitars to the pounding drum beats and the soaring vocal. This is the song that made me realise how talented Dark Bloom as are songwriters. This is largely due to the fact that by this point in the EP we have seen everything heavy and even a bit anthemic but 'In The Haze' takes on yet another personality, something gentler but still heavy rock at its core. Closing out 'In The Solace of What We Can't Possess' is the bands most personal track 'Secret Rituals'. This final song soars through it's message while coming across as the most anthemic. This is a really pretty track instrumentally that candidly battles with grief, heartbreak and the death of relationships. The lyric "I just can't seem to make this work" delivering a heart wrenching and relatable sentiment before the final chorus comes in to finish not only this song but the whole EP. Taking every element of alternative music from metalcore to hardcore to rock, Dark Bloom are a new band that have showed just what they're capable of on their debut EP 'In The Solace of What We Can't Possess'. If you're like me one listen wont be enough and you'll want to immediately go back for seconds. Going from opening with their heaviest work to date taking it down slowly into a raw modern rock anthem, the four-piece touch on each element of their unique sound and let people hear exactly why they are receiving the attention they are so early on in their career.
