Calva Louise may be one of the most unusual and loved artists coming up in the alternative scene and their new album 'Edge of the Abyss' shows off everything that makes them unique. Eleven tracks of never ending chaos made up of some seriously talented song construction and a creepy sci-fi story that runs throughout, Calva Louise have created something more than special with their album 'Edge of the Abyss'. A band that found each other from opposite corners of the world. Calva Louise have their own unique story that captures the attention of anyone, so it's no wonder that their music would be equally unique. Combining various influences, experiences and vocalist Jess Allanic's compelling narrative vision Calva Louise have always done things their way. Brand new album 'Edge of the Abyss' has already seen success with it's previously released tracks and creative music videos. The album's story sees characters travel dimensions as well as some mysterious human-like doubles that stalk people like shadows.

"Our album is called 'Edge of the Abyss' because that's how we live. One misstep and everything could fall apart. I emigrated twice, so I've already had a culture shock twice. This hurts a little less because this is where I want to be." - (Jess Allanic)

Taking your hand and welcoming you into the world of 'Edge of the Abyss' is 'Tunnel Vision' This opening track also comes with a brand new video that as always with this band you should be watching their videos, the visuals they come up with are insane. As a song, 'Tunnel Vision' captures the intensity that makes Calva Louise one of my favourite bands, hard-hitting but catchy and likely to give you a little whiplash. The second track on album 'W.T.F' has become a firm fan favourite and for good reason. This one alongside later tracks 'Aimless' and 'Impeccable' see Calva Louise's new evolved sound that makes 'Edge of the Abyss' potentially their strongest release ever. All these tracks are ridiculously catchy, especially lyrically with 'Aimless' and 'Impeccable'. If you aren't joining in with the chant in 'Impeccable' then what are you doing? While 'Aimless' feels more contained with little explosions of intensity here and there, 'W.T.F' is one huge blast of energy and 'Impeccable' manages to keep itself together giving it more of a haunting edge. A previously unheard track I need to talk about is 'Barely A Response', this one drops down immediately giving a much darker tone to the story but it doesn't stay there for long. This one is so unique and that's saying something when this is a Calva Louise album. There's a sweet tone especially in the melodic chorus but the venom of the harsher vocal and guitar is not missed, giving this one the feeling of like a possessed kids show, where you know things maybe aren't quite right but you become totally addicted. There's so many elements to a Calva Louise track and sometimes songs allow certain elements to shine more like in 'El Umbral' where in amongst the metalcore club track the piano piece manages to crawl through and completely steal the show. Whereas 'La Corriente' really takes on that dark nightclub vibe, it's loud and in your face metalcore sound is only made better by the creepy electronics and mighty vocal. Nearing the end of the album 'Hate in me' comes in as the second last track. This one is so fun with it's big almost comedic horror movie sounding guitars. You may have heard the breakdown and lead up to it doing the rounds on TikTok and honestly it was very cool to hear the whole song. It's got this cheesy value to it but there is no doubt that this is a very cleverly written track that's made to be simultaneously a massive metalcore track and little silly feeling and completely surreal. Closing the album is the first single to be released from it 'Under The Skin'. This one is very different to the rest of the tracks feeling a lot more like a typical metalcore track. Anthemic and melodic but with a vocal that spits and lets you feel that this is the end, the final battle. The huge track delivers a big ending and the emotive piano work adds to the strong feelings that 'Under The Skin' evokes. Hearing it as part of 'Edge of the Abyss' it's the perfect closer. This is an album that in my opinion is easily one of the most creative, unique and overall enjoyable pieces of work I've listened to this year. Not only is each song able to stand on it's own but 'Edge of the Abyss' as a whole tells a story that makes you want to stick around for all eleven tracks. I said this before but I truly believe that Calva Louise are one of the most exciting bands we have around at the minute, they're clearly not afraid to experiment and when they do it more than works. So go and listen to 'Edge of the Abyss' because you don't want to miss out on this one.
