Had a chat with Darren from Copper Lungs about their upcoming music and more...

Could you start by introducing yourself and your role in the band?
My name’s Darren, and I’m the lead singer of Copper Lungs. I also play guitar. I like to think of myself as the heart of the band, bringing the energy and emotion into everything we do.
So you’s have recently released your new single ‘Brushed In Gold’, what’s this one about?
‘Brushed In Gold’ is about the internal battle I faced during long night drives for work. It is about feeling the strain and exhaustion, but also recognising the importance and value that financial stability brings to life. It’s a reflection of that push and pull between personal sacrifice and building a better future.
This new single was nearly never released, what made you decide now was the time to put it out?
We always had a bit of a battle with this song. It was actually one of the first tracks we played around with when we got back together, but for a long time it just never felt quite right. When we revisited it with a more laid-back approach and leaned into a much pop-heavier sound, it suddenly clicked. It became one of our favourites, and we felt like it really shows a different side to our band that we hadn’t shared before.
With the upcoming album, have you approached this one any differently to previous releases?
Yeah, absolutely. 'Broken Beautiful' is the most honest and vulnerable piece of work we've ever written. It explores themes of love, death, and support, with real stories from my life that I felt I needed to express. In that way, we’ve become much more in touch with our own minds and struggles, and a lot more confident about speaking openly through our music. It’s been a really personal and powerful process for us.
Are there any songs on the album you are particularly proud of?
Honestly, we’re proud of every single song on this album. Each track is a piece of the story that makes up 'Broken Beautiful'. But if we had to pick a few standouts, 'Pieces of Me', 'Life Your Way', and 'Free World' are definitely some of our favourites. They each capture something really special about the journey we've been on.
Are there any artists that you would say have helped shaped Copper Lungs sound?
We take influence from a lot of bands, but honestly, it’s not something we think too much about when we’re actually writing. That said, we’re big fans of artists like The Band Camino, The 1975, and Nothing But Thieves. We like to think we take little bits of their songwriting styles and textures, but shape them into something that feels like our own.
What are your top three favourite things about being in a band and making music?
Playing live is definitely our favourite thing. There’s just something special that happens when we hit the stage together.
As stressful as the lead-up can sometimes be, spending time together on gig days and out on the road creates memories that will last a lifetime.
Finally, just having a creative outlet we’re so passionate about, and being able to express ourselves through music, is something we never take for granted.
Who would you say is your favourite artist you’ve seen live?
My favourite artist I’ve ever seen live has got to be either John Mayer or The Eagles, which might be a bit of a surprise since their music isn’t exactly like ours. But both put on the most incredible live shows I’ve ever experienced, and it really inspired me to step up what we bring to our own performances.
If you were to make an album for a completely different genre, what genre would you choose?
I’d love to make a country album. It’s such a popular genre right now, but more than that, it just seems like it would be great fun to dive into. There’s a real storytelling side to country music that I think would be amazing to explore.
Do you have anything upcoming that you would like to share?
Yeah, we’ve got a really exciting year shaping up. We’ve got some Scottish dates lined up, including Café Drummonds in Aberdeen this May and our album launch show in our hometown of Dundee, also in May.
Then we’re hitting the Main Stage at Heartland Festival at the end of June, and after that, we’ve got a full UK tour coming up in July.
Plus, there are a few more things we’re not quite ready to announce yet. It’s crazy, a bit overwhelming, but honestly, we just can’t wait to get out there and perform for everyone.
Lastly, if your music was a type of food, what type of food would it be?
I’d say our music would be like a big homemade lasagne. It’s layered, rich, full of different flavours, and there’s a lot of heart in every bite!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Yeah! We’ve actually created an online escape room for the album, which you can find through our social media or here: www.copperlungsbrokenbeautiful.com.
It’s packed with riddles all about the album, and if you solve them, you’ll unlock sneak previews of unreleased tracks and some bonus content. It’s been a lot of fun to put together, and we’re excited for everyone to get involved.
